Our members, WWF and ClientEarth, launched a legal complaint to the Office for Environmental Protection (OEP) against the Environment Agency for its failure to monitor and enforce environmental protections on nitrogen pollution. The OEP has since determined that the Government may have broken environmental law by watering down critical regulations on nitrogen pollution in England’s rivers. This followed the OEP’s annual progress report (January 2024) which found that the government is well off-track to meet its long-term water targets, with the OEP urging the Government to “speed up and scale up its efforts”.
